For the one I'm thinking of, the problem was my friend John was dead, Jade was probably dead by extension, and so Rose and I wanted to learn as much about the game as we could before I eventually jumped back in time to stop John from dying. Turned out it was necessary for time to go the way it was supposed to.

[Not that John was especially grateful in the long run, but he's not getting into that part.]
