Characters: Toriel, Frisk, Sora, Angel & Rhys Location 129 & 126 Date: Days 132-133 Summary: A monster family encounters a few dorks whilst they wander. Warnings: Will be updated as needed.
[Sora hadn't really been expecting to run into anyone; hadn't been planning on it. It seemed like a rare occurrence to see people in person as it was that he'd gotten use to just traveling alone for long stretches of time.
But he would have been lying if he'd said he was upset to see Frisk and Toriel. He would have been lying if he'd tried to say that he didn't enjoy the company.
It had been a long day of traveling and exploring that led him to the ruined house inside the tunnels and he'd been ready to curl up and pass out as soon as he got there. His mood had instantly changed when he found himself in the company of others, though, and he was quick to offer them some of his food to share and genuinely just seemed eager to chat with them for as long as they were willing.
Because people.]
So..Miss Toriel, can I ask you a question?
[He was in the midst of picking at some of the cheetos he'd gotten at the grocery store--thanks Cloud for starting this addiction--when he spoke, giving her a curious look.]
[Company if anything is grandly appreciated. Toriel knows for certain Frisk needs the company beyond just spending so much time with their mother. The same can be said for herself.
Encountering Sora leaves them with a pleasant buzz of activity and idle conversations whilst traveling. Even with her rough cough on her part and fatigue, Toriel is more than happy to talk.]
Frisk! [Even if she's very tired of that question herself, she still gives the child a slight chiding. She leaves it at that, shifting her attention back to their guest's question glad for the distraction.]
All monsters tend to be vastly different from one another due to the fact we are all made of magic. Some can look similar to cats, dogs, skeletons- but we are not exactly that.
My kind for example are boss monsters, but there are- only two left these days.
[Sora's easy smile and handling of any prickliness probably does a lot more to actually cow Frisk for their response than Toriel's chiding (not that the latter is without effect). They duck their head, mumbling a quiet apology.
They keep silent for a little while, letting Toriel explain, before piping up with their own addition.]
I saw all different kinds of monsters when I went through the Underground. There's Froggits and Moldsmals and then there's the dog sentries by Snowdin and Woshua and Vulkin and lotsa others too!
[Actually, they have something that might help here! They reach into their pocket and pull out a family picture.]
[Sora looks rather fascinated by that, though it reminds him a lot of some of the things he's experienced back home--like Genie! He stays quiet and listens with rapt attention as both of them explain, soaking it all up and trying to imagine what it all must be like.
Boy does he want to visit their home!
He leans forward when the picture is pulled out and a bright smile appears as he looks over each individual.]
You guys look really happy! So how did you guys become a family? Well--I mean, were you guys always a family or are you like me and my family! We just all sort of came together!
Monsters are purely made of magic, we have nothing akin to what humans do physically. We are just souls. If that helps you visualize it better.
[Frisk settling and offering an apology mollifies the boss monster considerably. Toriel relaxes a little more now, quieting when Frisk speaks and brings out the familiar picture.]
Came together covers it well. We've all found each other. [She looks at Frisk, willing to let her child take hold if they want to continue that story themselves.] The story is a bit of a long one.
[As they pull the picture back and rub it carefully between their fingers, Frisk glances up and back at Toriel, catching her eye long enough to realize that yes, this story is... up to them. What they want to say or not. Which makes them wonder how much they do want to say.
Some at least, maybe. Not everything. Even Toriel didn't know everything, though she knew a lot more now.]
It is. But um... [They hesitate for the briefest of moments, then press onward.] There was a mountain near where I lived, Mt. Ebott. Monsters were trapped under it by humans a long, long time ago. I fell down there by accident.
[Sora may not always be the quickest when it comes to catching onto things but right now, he is. It's obvious that whatever their story is, it's something that had carried a lot of weight.
He wouldn't pry, even if he was really curious.]
And you were able to help free the monsters? Or did you stay down there with them.
[It had to be one of those two scenarios, right? Since they were family and all.]
Frisk freed us. [She offers the short answer, looking to Frisk again. This story belongs wholly to her child.
She knows pieces, akin to a patchwork quilt slowly coming together she's learning more of what happened after she said goodbye to them back then.] Every monster now lives on the surface after centuries of being confined to the mountains.
[There's the tiniest of flinches, a sudden, subtle tightness to their expression as she credits them. Normally they're better at hiding it, but their filters have been more difficult to keep up here.
It also makes it that much harder to really think about how to tell the story. So they don't.]
Yeah, it was a long journey and um... I let lots of people, but we did it. [We.] And um... Asgore, he's the king, he asked me to be the ambassador for humans 'n monsters, so the fighting won't start again.
[Sora's curious. Really curious and it's taking all the self control he has not to blurt out a thousand questions at once.
Because the looks on their faces...
He offers up a soft smile instead, something proud and truly pleased all at the same time.]
I bet you're really good at it, too. From the sounds of it, you're a natural at helping others so something like that is probably easy as pie for you, Frisk!
[She saw the flinch, mentally filing that away for later to check on Frisk properly. The most pressing matter how is the itch in the back of her throat.
Toriel shifts away slightly to cough into her hand for a moment, not wanting to interrupt. When it winds down she speaks.] Frisk is a very good ambassador. Though they need to remember to take breaks here and there.
Let me know if this is okay! /flails

This is all good! next tag can be Frisk

Ah- of course, dear. What is it?
no subject
If it's why she's my Mom, she adopted me and it doesn't really matter anyway.
[They're really, really used to this question in Norfinbury, sorry Sora.]
no subject
No, that's not what I was going to ask. I figured that was probably the case!
[Families are families, no matter who or what they're made up of!
But--]
I was actually going to ask if all monsters where you guys come from look like Miss Toriel or if there are different ones.
[He's been really curious about their world--he's never seen anyone like Toriel before.]

[A little motherly doting crops up even now.]
